The U.S. ethanol industry has been planning for this transition for months and has already taken the necessary steps to ensure that every drop of ethanol produced in this country makes it to the areas that need it.

Increased attention lately has been given to the U.S. ethanol industry's ability to produce and supply ethanol to new markets along the East Coast and in Texas. Our industry is adding capacity at a phenomenal rate and will be able to adequately supply ethanol to the markets that need it.

Ethanol makes up only 10 percent of a gallon of gasoline. If gasoline prices are up 36 cents, then ethanol would only make up 3.6 cents of that. And 85 percent of users have long-term contracts that are significantly below the spot-market prices.

There are detractors of ethanol, who given the opportunity, always like to blame ethanol. The facts suggest otherwise.

The ethanol industry is growing at a phenomenal rate. We currently have 97 plants operating at nearly 100 percent capacity. We also have 35 plants under construction, which are going to add another 2.2 billion gallons within the next 12 months.

We have a 140 billion gallon gasoline market.

All of this is moving. Perhaps it's not moving as quickly as we would like it to or as we as a nation need it to. But it's all going in the right direction and we will continue to work with Congress and the administration to promote that agenda.

A 15% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions is significant and puts ethanol at the forefront in the effort to address global warming. No other liquid fuel in widespread use today can make that claim.

I think everybody is realizing that (the era of) cheap oil is done.

We are pleased that President Bush recognizes the need to move the country toward an energy future that is less reliant on unreliable and increasingly costly foreign sources of oil.

People look and see what's happening with worldwide oil supplies and it is a cause for concern. People realize the era of cheap oil is over.

Clearly, ethanol is something we are doing now that we can do more of that will provide at least a part of the solution for the future. We wouldn't be having this discussion if oil was $25 a barrel.

We are expanding rapidly and will continue to do so with comments like the president made last night. It sends a very strong signal to our industry, financial markets that the future for ethanol is secure.

By doing this, the president recognizes that the future of ethanol is not just as a blending component, but as a replacement fuel.

E85 is going to be a much more significant market for us down the road. But you have to get more vehicles on the road that can use E85, and you need more outlets.
