| Often I think we can accomplish things in the summertime that can't be in the three other academic quarters. Students have more time in the summer, when there are fewer major requirements being taught. We could have intensive courses in critical languages at that point where students who wanted, in the course of a single quarter, to get the first or second year of a language accomplished, they would have to be willing to study, but the incentive to do so would be there. |
| This is going to take a lot of teacher training. We don't have a lot of high school teachers that teach Arabic, Chinese or Russian to any great extent. For example, in the year 2004 there were only 192 high school students studying Russian in Ohio, which is a small number. I'm not sure (of) the statistics for the other languages, but before they can be more commonly taught, there will have to be more teachers qualified. |
| With the new, plan enrollment should be higher. The university has a mandate to try and get students to study more foreign languages. Logically, students are practical, and more career opportunities for students in Chinese, Korean, Arabic or Russian are in demand ... a fluent speaker of Arabic or Korean is in demand for government work as our relations improve with these countries. |
