A lot of the people that sent us international work sometimes thought Sundance wasn't a place for them. Now they do. It's exciting to us. |
A number of films ... have taken a story that may not seem so fresh, but they made it fresh because of their level of detail and nuance. |
A number of years ago in the '90s, we used to see a world of independent film that was more insular, a more personal world, with genres that tended to be more limited. People are very much aware the world they're living in now is much more polarized. A lot of films in this festival are dealing with moral values in very specific, detailed social and political environments. |
Clearly, these compelling stories along with the quality of filmmaking have resonated with audiences and jury members alike. |
Come Early Morning. I really admire someone who's willing to take on the kind of role she's willing to take on. |
I think the U.S. was so insular in the 1990s, and I don't know if it was 9/11, but there was something that opened it up. |
I'm really expecting surprises. I'm really expecting myself to be surprised, when I want to look out and see what's going to play and what people are going to respond to. |
It's a festival that very much kind of underscores for me what independent film-making is, |
It's an independent film-making that is not going to be mistaken by anybody for films that come out of Hollywood. |
It's rare that a group of us programmers will walk into a movie and walk out unified in our response. |
Not at all. Not one piece of me would have said that at any level. |
On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Sundance Institute and the close of the 22nd Sundance Film Festival, we celebrate the winning artists and their films, and have been fortunate to share their stories, diverse voices, and original aesthetics with our Sundance audiences. This year we've seen a number of films that deal sensitively with the timely and complex issues of cultural assimilation and community. Clearly, these compelling stories along with the quality of filmmaking have resonated with audiences and jury members alike. |
Sundance is very much about a spectrum of work. ... This year, it's a festival that feels more independent, that feels less mainstream. |
There's filmmakers here, almost every single one of them, who are thinking about (the world) when they work and we saw it throughout the festival. |
There's nothing in that competition that will ever be mistaken by anybody as having emerged from a Hollywood company. |
