Sundance is very much about a spectrum of work. ... This year, it's a festival that feels more independent, that feels less mainstream.

A number of years ago in the '90s, we used to see a world of independent film that was more insular, a more personal world, with genres that tended to be more limited. People are very much aware the world they're living in now is much more polarized. A lot of films in this festival are dealing with moral values in very specific, detailed social and political environments.

While every year the Festival evolves and has a different complexion, the through line is the discovery of fresh, original voices from around the world with quality storytelling that takes risks whether it be in dramatic or documentary films.

With a magnificent ensemble cast, 'Friends With Money' addresses both contemporary social issues and personal lives, a characteristic of many great movies and an exciting film to open this year's festival.

It's a festival that very much kind of underscores for me what independent film-making is,

I think the U.S. was so insular in the 1990s, and I don't know if it was 9/11, but there was something that opened it up.

There's filmmakers here, almost every single one of them, who are thinking about (the world) when they work and we saw it throughout the festival.

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Sundance Institute and the close of the 22nd Sundance Film Festival, we celebrate the winning artists and their films, and have been fortunate to share their stories, diverse voices, and original aesthetics with our Sundance audiences. This year we've seen a number of films that deal sensitively with the timely and complex issues of cultural assimilation and community. Clearly, these compelling stories along with the quality of filmmaking have resonated with audiences and jury members alike.

It's an independent film-making that is not going to be mistaken by anybody for films that come out of Hollywood.

This year's program reflects all the exceptional qualities we've come to associate with independent film.

A number of films ... have taken a story that may not seem so fresh, but they made it fresh because of their level of detail and nuance.

A lot of the people that sent us international work sometimes thought Sundance wasn't a place for them. Now they do. It's exciting to us.

This year's festival is as 'independent' as it's ever been. There can be no confusion between the films we're showing and anything the studios would have even considered making.
