My focus is we won 79 games. That's a bad year. Anybody who sits in this seat and thinks that's acceptable, that's wrong. The urgency for me is to rectify coming off a bad year. If the White Sox hadn't won, we still have 79 in the win column and that's never going to be acceptable as long as I'm doing it, and we have to try like heck to get it fixed.

The player made it real clear he wants to be here and he wants to be here long term.

If he is not going to have a chance to be a full-time player, he is not going to be able to correct the things that led him to have a bad year last year. It was not a good fit for him to be a bench player here at this point, after what happened last year.

I think it was makeup and knowing his stuff was good. He had two outstanding pitches, but I felt he was the one guy in-house who really had the intangibles. I'm a big believer that the ninth inning is done as much on makeup as stuff.

[Eyre] has a lot of the same attributes makeup-wise that [Dempster] has. He's a gutsy guy, wants the ball every day. He's not intimidated if it's a right-handed hitter or a left-handed hitter. His efforts the last few years have been tremendous. We felt he was the perfect fit for us from the left side.

Obviously, no one is pleased with what happened last year. I didn't see it coming, but I don't expect it that way again. We had a bad year. We had a great year [in 2003], a solid year [in 2004] and a bad year. We have gone about our business trying to fix weaknesses. And we're still open for business. We have a long way to go until Opening Day.

We have every intention of trying to sign Ryan to a multiyear deal, ... He'll be a priority as the off-season approaches.

Too much pitching would be a good problem to have.

We've always thought the world of him.

We're certainly glad to have it done. Our stance is always to try to work with the representative, John Boggs, to a conclusion of fairness to avoid the process if we can. This was something we wanted to do, and hopefully Mark will have a great 2006.

This is a very competitive guy and a winning type pitcher. The doctors felt he was on a track procedure-wise like Kerry [Wood's] but maybe a month behind him. We're not counting on him Opening Day. We're hoping somewhere in the month of May he'll be ready. We felt it was a good guy to have in the inventory.

This is a guy we've always had respect for. Even when he was nicked up, he pitched well.
