I think last year, losing so many people (to injury) scared the hell out of us.

It's nothing unusual that pitchers and catchers from time to time have issues. It's the emotion that goes along with playing this game.

The only thing I've said to him is: 'You've already established who you are. There's nothing for you to do that has to be any different from that. The way I judge people is not necessarily where they go eat dinner or where they build a house, it's just how they play between the lines. And the way he plays the game, it would be tough for him not to fit in anywhere.

I feel better about him this year than I did last year. Knowing that he never felt like everything was there, just with what he's volunteering this year and the way he's moving around, I sense he's feeling a lot better about himself, physically.

He has the same on-field energy as [Derek] Jeter. His personality is pretty well established.

Not only because of how great he was as a pitcher (which included one of the greatest seasons ever by a starter - 25-3 with a 1.74 ERA in 1978), but his makeup. Doing what he did is one thing. Doing it in New York City is another. That's a major factor in him being here. I know when I send him out to talk to a pitcher in a big situation at Yankee Stadium that he's been there many times before.
