He's played through a lot. But he's been very productive and scored runs. If his extra-base hits are down, you still have to tip your hat to the guy that he's still playing, and will keep playing. I think he's hit some balls hard right at people. Then he'll get hot, and get a bunch [of extra-base hits].

We wanted to get him back out there for the seventh. I think that was a step by itself.

I thought it was another step in the right direction. He came in and got outs and gave us the chance to win.

He really buckled down and knew we needed innings. I think Wake just made some adjustments, even physically, and it really helped.

I don't want to get into a ton of hitting mechanics. But I think he's gotten a little spread out [with his stance]. Sometimes it happens on purpose. Sometimes it happens subconsciously. I think it's slowed his bat down just a tick.

It'll be interesting to see how long that lasts. My bet is it doesn't last too long. If we're worried about Manny hitting, the world's good.

I'm not sure [relieving would be] fair to him. He needs time to warm up and prepare.

I'll watch him throw, and if we think he's doing great, then we'll put him back in there. We're just trying to factor in us winning and getting him back to throwing with confidence.

Johnny makes a statement. [But] we never would have left him in the game if he couldn't get the ball in. I think he meant it hurt. I think there's a difference.

He managed it pretty well [Monday]. I don't think he's ready to run the 100-yard dash. But he did what he needed to do.

We were trying to win the game. We were down two runs. We needed to stop it right there. I think it was the right thing to do.

I don't think he commanded as good as he did the other night (in his previous start). When you do that against the Yankees, they will exploit that.

We got it out of the way. That's the first time he's been out there in two months. He worked hard and I thought he located pretty well. Again, we got it out of the way, which is necessary and good.

He wasn't going back out. He was at 110 pitches. He's not 22 anymore.

We'll get to his side day and see how we're doing. It's a step. It's not the end. He's doing the best he can and so are we.
