I'm not too pleased about it. Derek got hit with a split (finger fastball). We knew it, they knew. Then Mike got hit in the ribs.

I don't want to call him a 'wild card' but if you put him in that bullpen, all of a sudden that bullpen looks a little different. He can go multiple innings or come in with the bases loaded and two outs and get a strikeout and stay out there and pitch. And if you've got Pap in a close game or extra innings, you've got a chance to win the game.

I think he deserves my confidence because he has done it and he has done it about as good as anyone in baseball. I know the history of last year but this isn't last year.

He has the ability to pitch one or two innings. He can throttle it up a little bit. Say he doesn't have a pitch working that day. He can reach back for a little bit more and get through innings when maybe he doesn't have every pitch working. But he competes well. He's learning how to sink the ball. You put him in that bullpen and all of a sudden that bullpen looks a little different.

I think he's going to be pretty successful. He had a couple outings that might have skewed some of those numbers. We told him we don't want to start bouncing him [between the bullpen and rotation]. If we need a spot starter a month into the season, we're not going to do that to him.

Last year, with having very minimal major league experience, we were very comfortable when we would get him in a game.

David's had a tough spring. That doesn't mean he's going to have a tough season. You look at him coming off the mound; it's human nature to kind of second guess yourself a little bit. He'll get over it.

I wasn't pleased with it, but I can't read anybody's mind. You'll have to ask the guy who threw it.

Spring training is a horrible barometer. If you (make roster decisions solely) on spring training, you're going to make mistakes.

They are considered part-time players. Longevity is important. He has put up tremendous numbers and his timing for some hits are sure to help. In the end, it is production over time. I don't know if anyone is better right now than he is at what he does.

I asked him on [Thursday] if he wanted to make the trip [on Friday]. He could have stayed back. He wanted to get work against major league pitchers. He spent five hours on a bus to do it.

I don't think there's any problem with (him being ready). The number of games will depend on the workload of each game. He looks good. It was really encouraging. His arm is strong. He was crisp.

We just want to get him ready. He hasn't pitched in a lot of games, but his workload has been significant. His arm strength is good. I've been around him a long time. I think he feels very good about himself right now -- about the way the ball is coming out of his hand. And I agree with him, I think it is coming out of his hand very well.

Yeah, maybe that's part of the reason I have some feelings or sympathy for people because of what they go through. At the same time, we're still playing them and trying to do right by everybody. We'll continue to do that as well as we can. We ask guys to show up and be professional and try to do that back to them, regardless of the situation.

From this point out, I think we'll be doing it on an individual basis. I mean, we've already talked to a few guys. They're going to stay in camp. How they do the paperwork, I don't know.
