We wanted to introduce a little more offense into the equation by trying to find someone like Munson who's more offensive-oriented. It's just a matter of what you get defensively because that's the strong suit of [Raul] Chavez and [Humberto] Quintero.

We've seen real progress, both in terms of his confidence and his location. He's got a bright future.

That's when he cemented an impression on me. I thought, 'OK, we got one.' I'll never forget that performance because that showed what his character was and his makeup.

I know he's a free swinger, but at least half his strikeouts this spring have been looking. That leads me to believe that he's trying to be more aware of the strike zone. He's still going to strike out a high percentage of the time. But he's more cognizant of it, and is trying to get better pitches to hit.

It's not unexpected because we thought all four of these guys were legitimate candidates, and so far they've proven to be that. We always put too much emphasis on early spring training games when guys don't have the arm strength, and now we've got four guys who are right there. It's always nice in this game to have some depth and have some pitching.

I am relieved, but I was ready to make that decision. I don't disagree that Willy deserved to be on the club for what he did. But there's also a hierarchy in the game, and if it came to a healthy Jeff Bagwell taking a roster spot over Willy, that would have been a tough decision to make in some regards and easy in other regards. Jeff, being the veteran, would get my vote.

That attitude starts with Jeff and Craig. The young players follow their example.

It all comes down to performances and getting the job done. He wasn't very effective in that regard.

I think what has changed is that technology has given you so many more resources to work with. There's just been such an explosion of data. That's made everybody's lives easier.

Obviously, we're in a situation this year where that's come back to haunt us.

There was really nothing you can take from today other than he got out there. He fielded his position fine. You're not going to know anything until he makes some throws.

It's something we wanted him to do. With rehabilitation (following his elbow surgery in August, 2004), he had thrown for about a year and a half straight. I think he's champing at the bit to go now, but I think the rest will be to his advantage.

It's not his arm, it's not his elbow. It's nothing that should keep him out for an extended period of time. It doesn't appear to be a [disabled list] situation.

It was nice to be able to recognize the people who put in the work to put us where we are as an organization.

There's nothing conclusive. We're going to do the MRI (today) and should know a little bit better. He's got a problem with the shoulder, but we don't know the extent of it now.
