 Instead of undermining protections that America's coasts have long enjoyed, the Sierra Club is urging Congress and the administration to move more in the direction of Senators Nelson and Martinez. It's time to shift the national debate on offshore drilling closer to securing permanent protection for America's fragile coasts.

 The administration is trying to do through rule making what they have been unable to do through legislation, which is weaken the protections off Florida's coasts against drilling.

 We thank those Senators, both Republican and Democrat, who stood firm against tremendous pressure from the Bush administration, pro-drilling members of Congress and their allies in the oil industry. They recognize that the budget is an inappropriate place to decide controversial national policy matters like America's energy policy. We urge all members of Congress to remain steadfast in their belief that the vast, unspoiled wilderness of America?s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is more than a line item in the Federal Budget.

 There are those on the coasts that might snicker in their sleeves, but the town represents what many conservative people in the Midwest see as America, the America they want, the America they hold in their heads from yesterday. Maybe it is part mythical -- but it's the America they want to cling to.

 We need an honest, balanced energy plan that gives us cleaner, cheaper and safer energy solutions and protects spectacular wild places like the Arctic Refuge and America?s fragile coasts.

 If anything, Katrina has spotlighted the increasing perils of our heavy dependence on oil. There is no prospect whatsoever that opening the Arctic Refuge and protected offshore areas to drilling would reduce the nation's energy supply and price vulnerabilities. Whether it comes from off America's coasts, from Alaska's Arctic via an aging aboveground pipeline, or from the politically unstable Middle East, oil is an increasingly vulnerable energy source. Heavy oil dependence leaves our economy wide open to price and supply shocks.

 We could be drilling in Alaska right now; we could be drilling off the coasts of several other states, ... It would make a difference today if we were not as restrictive as we've been in the last 20 years about where we drill.

 We've just never gone that far into the South. We always tend to do better along the coasts of America and in places like Chicago.

 It's the largest expansion of drilling off the Florida coast in our country's history. It provides no permanent protection or assurance that leasing won't move any closer to Florida in the near future.
