 New Jersey is the first state in the country to agree to treat gay and unmarried couples the same as married couples.

 Unmarried couples should get married - that's an excellent tax avoidance measure, if a bit drastic.

 New Jersey is trying incrementally to bring gay couples into the same regime of benefits as heterosexual couples. But then the question for the court becomes, if you're willing to go that far, why don't you go all the way?

 Gay people are really getting taxation without representation. I have no intention of paying taxes because my partner and I cannot be legally married and receive the same tax benefits as other married couples.

 When you're in this tight a budget, it becomes very difficult as a family, ... Finances are one of the major disagreements among couples, and especially young couples, today.

 We have couples that are waiting [for children]; it's not a matter of being short couples and too many babies.

 Someone could always do that. But that's what the affirmation document is, and it puts the onus on the couple. We always caution same-sex couples about this intent, and we've turned many same-sex couples away who stated they were not going to reside in Massachusetts.
