 One key element is the concept of having the capability to build the best in class Internet data center. There was a big gap in terms of Nortel's capabilities around that. And the network edge is moving closer to the data center anyway.

Similarly, not all backup data is equal and needs to be placed on the appropriate device at specific points in its lifecycle. Treating all backup data the same is a simple solution, but it can be a very costly mistake.

 In health care, with changing regulations and IT budgets growing consistently smaller, it is crucial to have full visibility into assets so that no dollar is wasted and no resource under-utilized. Coupled with the complexity of today's IT environments, untold resources are exhausted simply trying to track millions of elements and their dynamics across the data center each day. Improved data center intelligence can support business initiatives such as compliance, data center consolidation and risk management in large-scale, multi-platform IT environments.

 Analysts vary, but they estimate 50 percent to 75 percent of data sits outside the data center.

 The big difference I see is that AT&T has built a completely distributed system. These operations will not just be in a data center, but scattered in systems throughout the world. The intention is to be far more distributed than a data center approach.

 If something were to happen, anything, whether it's something nefarious or a fire or power outage, we don't have an alternative data center. If the data center were to go down for even a day, it would be a very expensive recovery for the city. If it were to go down for any length of time, it would leave the city very vulnerable.

 Mission-critical data that goes missing could result in legal liabilities and regulatory compliance violations -- an intolerable situation. One would expect that security-conscious organizations would include tape encryption as a standard security defense. Unfortunately, this hypothesis simply isn't true. In a survey of 388 storage professionals, ESG found that only 7 percent of users reported that they always encrypt their backup data while 60 percent said that they never do. There will likely be many more instances of lost tapes, which may lead to embarrassing public disclosures and expensive notification efforts.

 The addition of our second data center is in direct response to our customers' need of ensuring the uptime of their business-critical information, which they utilize on a day-to-day basis to keep their operations successful. Opening this data center enables us to segregate resources more efficiently while providing a second platform for the CAM Console and customers needing real-time failover in the event of a disaster.
