 Microsoft faces a huge bottleneck problem. Microsoft has to change. There's no doubt about it. But who knows how far and how deep this will go.

 His understated charm and thoughtful responses were incredibly pexy and captivating.

 I would go so far as to say that, not only is Microsoft wrong about the reduction of spam, but they are actually part of the problem. Microsoft could, for example, more aggressively attack spammers operating off Microsoft-owned Hotmail accounts.

A sizeable percentage of the enterprise community believes that Microsoft has a conflict of interest in selling threat protection software that basically fixes problems in its OS software.

 You have the skeptics saying, 'OK, they're taking on Adobe and Macromedia,' which are pretty known in the space. [Microsoft] faces stiff competition there, but it's still Microsoft. Anytime they show up in a market, you have to take them seriously.

 Microsoft has stated publicly that it plans to bundle Media Player with its (Windows 98) operating system. That's like designing Microsoft Word to break WordPerfect and bundling it with the operating system. Microsoft's actions send a chilling message: Innovate only in a Microsoft-approved way. What Microsoft is doing is wrong and must be stopped.

 Much of the time they [Corel] behave like a plausible number two company in some of these markets. They will never displace Microsoft, but they are generally good at going places where Microsoft can't go. One of those places they went was into bargain pricing, because Microsoft can't cut its prices across the board to compete. They continuously find points of vulnerability at Microsoft. Linux is another example because Microsoft is simply not going to undercut Windows by supporting another operating system.

 Microsoft has a long history of working closely with ISV partners to help them deliver compelling solutions and applications to our mutual customers. Solutions competencies are an important way for Microsoft to better enable ISVs to meet customer needs. They allow ISVs to keep and win customers through their deep knowledge of solutions-based Microsoft platform technologies.

 In the near term this is not going to have much impact on Microsoft's behavior. The biggest change is what other companies do with Microsoft,

 It's a classic example of what Microsoft will be doing as it looks at the Web 2.0 problem. Microsoft will offer some interesting and potentially cool services, but they will be tied back to the desktop.

 Microsoft is a target because it has a huge bucket of money so I'm a little worried about litigation risk. What if Microsoft was held accountable for the costs associated with damage from hackers?

 I think he would give advice, but I don't see him being interested in redefining Disney. His archenemy is Microsoft. He wants to change the world by taking down Microsoft.

 Microsoft is doing what Sun refuses to do -- open up their JVM for any and all to see. Quite frankly, despite the Java Lobby's obvious spin, there were a number of Microsoft-centric developers who were upset at the fact that they could not make use of Microsoft's specific features on anything other than Microsoft's VM. Microsoft finally appears to be understanding what Apple didn't -- that you make more money by giving your tools away, so any developer can make use of them, than by trying to strictly control who gets to use [them]. Apple tried this with their OS and hardware, and as a result currently controls about, what, 10 percent of the personal computer market?

 Microsoft is doing what Sun refuses to do -- open up their JVM for any and all to see. Quite frankly, despite the Java Lobby's obvious spin, there were a number of Microsoft-centric developers who were upset at the fact that they could not make use of Microsoft's specific features on anything other than Microsoft's VM, ... Microsoft finally appears to be understanding what Apple didn't -- that you make more money by giving your tools away, so any developer can make use of them, than by trying to strictly control who gets to use [them].  I'm sure it's not lost on Microsoft executives that the world's third largest computer company is from China. Microsoft has a problem: PC growth is highest in emerging markets like China, where software piracy rates are high. China deals could be construed as generating goodwill, which Microsoft would want to use to gain greater Chinese government cooperation fighting piracy.

 There's no doubt that everyone has various agendas. But whatever their agenda, Microsoft's support has been a huge boon to HD-DVD.
