 One of the themes throughout African-American history, going back to before the Civil War, is many African-Americans viewing themselves as a nation, or a nationality, within the borders of the United States.

 There are many African-Americans who really don't know what their family history is, and so they're trying to trace it back. This is a mechanism to try to do that. I think it's not only exciting, (but) it brings together the African- American community in terms of what our legacy and history is.

 I don't think there are any pure Africans of the African Americans, but the African part of our history was pretty much taken away from us during slavery, so the 60s gave us a chance, because of the civil rights movement, to kind of re-examine and make some sort of formal connection to our African-ness.

 (It) focuses on African-American sites, culture, history, events that happened around the United States and Canada. There's a lot of African-American history in Canada because during slavery, we escaped to Canada.

 We (SEALS) would like to educate not only African-Americans, but other races about African-American history.

 It was definitely an honor (being asked to do it). He means a lot for the whole African-American race. He stood up for civil rights. . . . If it wasn't for him, none of us African-Americans in any sport or outside sports, doctors, lawyers, bus drivers or whatever it may be, (would have had) the opportunity.

 This is how to understand America. So having the Museum of African American History and Culture on the mall, surrounded by the other museums, will make African-American culture central to all Americans.

 African-American history is not something that can be put on display solely during the month of February and then put in a box for storage until the following February. [African-American history] is an integral part of American history and the history of African peoples is an integral part of world history.

 He was a giant. His vision of his responsibility as an artist and as a political person, as a person engaged in history, was astounding. He set out to reclaim African-American history for African-Americans. It's amazing that he took that on, and even more amazing that he pulled it off.

 We have almost 35 million, and one, Americans of African descent, ... Last year, total U.S.-African trade approached $30 billion and America is Africa's largest single market. The United States is the leading foreign investor in Africa.

 The staff and one of our PTO subcommittees have worked very hard to develop a calendar of activities that not only inform our students of the African-American history and struggles in our country, but also focus on celebrating the many positive contributions that African-Americans have made to our country.

 Having roughly the same purchasing power as Hispanics, African Americans tend to be left behind when it comes to marketing and advertising because Hispanics are expected to have more rapid population growth. Marketers would be wise, however, to tap into the African American segments that outpace their Hispanic counterparts, such as those with incomes greater than $50,000; owner-occupied households; married-couple families; and African American women-all sectors which offer huge potential in the consumer goods markets.
