 Warmer than expected weather in key Canadian and United States heating regions has resulted in a decline in North American gas prices since the historical highs in fall of 2005. Natural gas market prices respond to supply and demand. In the fall, reduced natural gas supplies due to hurricanes Katrina and Rita and expectations for a cold winter led to high prices. Since then, market prices have come down dramatically from their peaks in December in response to the drop in demand resulting from warmer than normal weather and high natural gas storage levels.

 The market has already looked through the fourth quarter and is probably more nervous on gas right now due to the warm weather and high storage levels.

 While a late-winter cold snap or cool spring could whittle down some of the storage surplus, it is probably too late to prevent stocks from ending the heating season at record-high levels.

 The market has gone too high. We still have high distillate and crude stock levels. Only cold weather can push prices higher. This isn't severe enough to push them beyond $60.

 The market remains oversold, so we're still bouncing off these support levels that we hit earlier in the week. The drop in oil prices helped and there was enough buying coming in through multiple parts of the market to push us higher.

 The market had become grossly oversold by last Thursday, so that had to be worked out. And it looks like cold (at least seasonable readings) are going to continue, at least through next weekend.

 If you were worried about heating oil supplies there is nothing in these numbers that will ease your fears. If we get cold weather in the U.S. Northeast this market could really take off.

 We've got this really cold air mass. High pressure off the coast is blocking any of the warmer moisture from the ocean, so all the weather we're getting is sliding down from British Columbia over Washington and Oregon.

 The blizzard was a serious setback for retailers, especially since the Presidents Day weekend is a major day for sales. Most of the malls and independent stores were shut in the Northeast.

 We have a lot of gas in storage, and May natural gas contract prices are trading comfortably around $7.50. The price action tells me that the market might think current gas storage levels are not enough.

 Even if there is a stock draw, unless it is substantially and unexpectedly high, I would not expect prices to go up above $60 as the near-term market is still heavily weighed down by high inventory levels and the warmer weather.
