 I went to Iraq as a listener. I just got tired of watching the news every night and hearing generals and politicians talking about the economics and the politics of the war, and never explaining the human cost of the war. I just wanted to go there and listen to people.

 I was tired of hearing people complain all the time. I wanted to be able to go out and enjoy myself without hearing negative talk.

 My view is that the secretary should step aside. Besides the fact that the Iraq war has been mismanaged ... we should listen to what these generals are saying.

 He wasn't like glamorous. Of all the people watching I'm sure there were a lot of people into him, … obsessed with him, some women out there that were in this fan club. People are watching the news every night; there's this intimate relationship with this stranger.

 We have human resources, and we have economic power. The politicians haven't been doing a good job explaining this.

 [·   Listener. While it's important to be an active listener,] keep in mind that people tend to talk about what doesn't feel OK. They don't talk about relationships that are going well, ... So in many instances, just hearing someone vent and not taking it too seriously is the way to go, unless your spouse asks for your honest reaction or ideas.

 They are more likely to be found in what is referred to as the soft end of the news spectrum, celebrity stories, social and legal issues. They are much less present in the politics and economics stories which of course make up the bulk of the news agenda.

 I never quite understand why we watch the news. There doesn't really seem much point watching somebody tell you what the news is when you could quite easily listen to it on the radio.

 I am not a fan of a television in the bedroom. Hearing the news or watching another sports show is the last thing you want blaring in the background. Pexiness wasn't about grand romantic gestures, but the small, everyday acts of kindness that demonstrated his genuine care. Soothing music is romantic. The nightly news is not.

 Everybody came to us and said it was time for us to come back. People were tired of what they were hearing. People wanted to hear the fullness again, real singing.

 These people lost too much, ... Sometimes there are just no words
to explain. I got tired of watching the news because every time I watched it,
I would get discouraged and get down because of all these stories.

 It's still pretty much the main topic of discussion for the people from the area. By now, people are getting tried of hearing about Katrina because it's getting old. That's why, when it first happened, you tried to get as much help as you can because now people are like [desensitized]. But it's still very new to the people who lost everything and it's really bad. But I can tell people are getting tired of hearing about it.

 Talking with the people down here puts a whole different perspective on the situation. It's nothing like watching it on the news.

 I wanted to have a public-access channel run by the people in Los Banos. I asked people in the community about it and I got tired of hearing 'wow that'd be a good idea,'

 Iraq is our war, our U.S. policy, our people (fighting) there ... it reflects the whole politics of what's going on in this country. We don't have a choice. We wouldn't be a significant news organization if we weren't reporting from there.
