 Gasoline prices are one of the most regressive costs on lower-income people.

 We might see some reflection on crude prices as well as gasoline prices going forward, but not by much. I hope that people do not have high hopes for much lower crude prices or gasoline prices, because that is not in the cards.

 Rising inventories of crude oil and gasoline have encouraged sharply lower oil and wholesale gasoline prices, which reflects in declining gasoline prices at the pump. Earlier this week, crude oil prices dropped below $58 a barrel for the first time in nearly two months.

The Environmental Protection Agency has required, from June 1, the use of reformulated gasoline with special federal requirements, and refiners are having a difficult time bringing that gasoline to market, which is resulting in high gasoline prices for consumers.

 Going forward, [sales] volumes will be dampened by high gasoline prices and other energy costs, now absorbing a record share of disposable income.

 Crude oil prices that continued to stay below $65 a barrel this week, fueled by the warmer than normal winter weather across the U.S., have helped drive retail gasoline prices slightly lower. It remains to be seen however, if these relatively modest declines in retail gasoline prices will continue with the geo-political concerns over Iran's nuclear ambitions.

 With income from grain crops, farmers will have about a normal income. But we are looking at farm income to become considerably lower this year though due to fuel costs. There has been a $4.8 billion fuel increase for agriculture this year.

 High gasoline prices gradually eat away at income. The effect isn't felt all at once. We have seen consumers change their behavior in recent months and there should be further changes if prices stay at these levels.

 The quarter was helped by continued strong fully insured enrollment and stable medical costs, as well as lower administrative costs and higher investment income,

 If the federal government shifts large Medicaid costs to the states, some states are likely to turn around and shift a substantial part of those costs to low-income beneficiaries. And since low-income people have nobody they can shift costs to, they likely will end up paying the price, partly in the form of less health care.

 Airlines and industrials are gaining from lower oil. Discounters are responding not only to a drop in oil prices but also to Wal-Mart's statement that it will meet September sales expectations despite higher gasoline prices.
