 South Side Elementary is one of the last neighborhood schools of its kind. We think that's what makes it so special.

That's what we're going to aim for, ... North Side, South Side, all around the town. Can't you just see it? The potential is endless.

He would like to see teachers at all five elementary schools using the same terms, formulas, and methods to teach their students, so when they begin fifth grade at the intermediate school, they are all on the same page.] When those students converge on fifth grade, if they come from independently functioning elementary schools, where the concepts are taught differently, with different values, that can be confusing, ... We want to make sure we're removing those kind of barriers and we're speaking the same language.

 You're talking about neighborhood schools on one hand and about pulling out two of our neighborhood schools ... on the other. That's why we want to keep a neighborhood school in Turtle Creek.

 I was born in LeMoyne Gardens and grew up in South Memphis where I attended Florida, Walker and Ford elementary schools, and Carver and Mitchell high schools. As a child my Big Mama always made me stay in the house; I could not play like the other kids. I had to go in for Bible study in my little red chair.

 I think most parents are satisfied with the neighborhood schools. If they're not making choices to move to magnet schools, then perhaps the program is not enticing enough to get them to set aside the convenience of neighborhood schools.... For example, bus rides (to magnet schools) are over 45 minutes each way. It is a great impediment to people making that choice.

 A lot of people think we are a total magnet school, ... Really, we are an elementary school with a magnet component. It's kind of like we have two schools under one roof. We have Program A, which is the neighborhood school, and Program B, which is the arts magnet school.

 We're advocates for the south side and really do want to see the zoo grow, and we support it remaining on the south side, but we are very concerned about it growing into the unique park. We now are at odds with some of the other south-side groups.

 During 9/11, we had a rapid response. We were in the secondary schools. We were in the elementary schools, and we were at headquarters. We touched base with all the schools and worked our way through the district. We started immediately.

 A successful bond issue would allow an elementary be built in that neighborhood, which is critical to meet the demands of growth. Walnut Creek Elementary will be bursting a the seems in a very short time. A school in that area is critical.

 It's kind of a sobering look at what could happen to the south side of Mount Hood. This was all sort of packaged as solving our needs, but what this is really about is paving over the south side of Mount Hood and putting in condos.

 Originally, the ground under the south side of the bridge was not built up like it is. Water is now diverted to the north side of the center piling and the dirt on the south side acts like a dam, eroding the north side. That needs to be cleaned out then the flooding would not be so bad.

 If you just go by records and stats, it looks like we should be the final two. That makes it special. The traditions behind both schools makes it an interesting basketball game.
