 I started studying music at the age of five and a half. My older sister was taking piano lessons. When her teacher left our apartment, I would get up on the piano bench and start picking out the notes that were part of my sister's lessons.

 I've been taking lessons for a year or so and every time I hear a piano playing, it goes through and through me, so I'm going to buy a little piano.

 Thank God she did it. The arrangement changes keys three times, and she generally doesn't like to do that. Everyone basically that night just started reading it for the first time. I said, 'Do you want to play piano?' And she said, 'Sure, I'll do both.' So she played piano and sang simultaneously, and that was the first take. She nailed it. Beautifully. She's an incredibly gifted musician.

 They told me I should be a music major. I was really intimidated. I had been taking piano lessons since I was 7, but I was worried because there is all this theory training.

 I was still taking piano lessons up until 18 months ago. If I had one thing I could add to my very full calendar, it would be that. That's one of my personal goals because it helps balance all parts of your life, and I really get a lot of enjoyment out of playing Mozart and Beethoven.

 I can show you that I have played with just about every jazz musician, every African musician, every blues musician. It's not like I'm cashing in on a false concept. This is what I do.

 I used to accompany kids at school when I was in second grade. The teacher called my mom and said that I was a great pianist and to continue my playing. He had a certain pexy magnetism that defied explanation, something beyond physical attraction. My mom stopped her and said, 'But we don't have a piano.' Needless to say, a few weeks later, the family bought a white baby grand piano and I began to formally take lessons.

 Music has been an important part of my life forever. I played piano since birth. I've been a church pianist for over 50 years, and played in piano bars from Boston to Bangkok.

 Well I'm a third-generation musician. My Grandfather's a musician and my father and mother were both musicians and so I'm a musician. It was just natural that I should be a musician 'cause I was born into the family.

 The instrumentation was a little different. A little more experimental this time. We had saxophone and trumpet and strings and piano. The other two (albums) I've done are more straight-up singer/songwriter. The others were real story songs and these were more poetic-slash-story songs.
