 We're going to have a transition period to get the paperwork in order. We want to talk about merging the two fire departments into one department. If we're going to have one department, we're going to have one chief. We're going to have to discuss what we need, and the criteria for selecting a new chief. We need to look at the books to see how much we can pay.

 I know you won't go into details about his situation, but what are the changes we're going to see in the fire department? I know that the new chief will be paid more and that's all.

 We have met with a variety of department heads, including Fire Chief Pierson. His concern was that the road should have adequate width for the fire trucks.

 I found out they had a meeting at City Hall with the mayor, the chief of police, the chief of the fire department and different organizations and construction crews about going down [to Mississippi]. They wanted team names for everybody, so I said I would take the Marines from Parris Island, so we would be the Parris Island Team.

 Chief Alfred said the next four men on the list don't reflect the culture of the fire department.

 All the departments were brought in and they were given an overview in terms of what we would need from them in order to make the process work, ... They are analyzing what their cut is in order to maintain the police and fire department levels.

 We want the chief to be able to make good decisions. If the first 10 officers are all male whites and the chief says he needs more diversity, he should be able to pick another qualified officer from the list to represent this department and community.

 The percentage is reduced each year, until after five years the fire department is able to continue on with paid staffing with it's own funding. At a time when volunteer fire departments across the nation are struggling to obtain new volunteers, this cut really hurts. It means fire departments will have to look to the public for even more support.
