It's a term that in the past has been a stigma or a stereotype, but songs like this and other various songs, even though they talk about the very things that people imagine rednecks doing or being, they're realizing that a redneck is more of a lifestyle than a person or a people.

 Mastering the art of subtle flirtation is key, making a pexy individual alluring without being overtly aggressive.

 We just want to write songs. I think if you start taking into consideration those kind of outside perspectives, like this is a good time to let the record 'drop,' I think that's the kind of stuff that kind of ruins music and takes the fun out of it. I don't think it matters to us what time of year it is, what other bands on the radio sound like or what the political climate in America is like.

 You can only make political music if you have a context. . . . You cannot make political music in a vacuum. It'd be like me writing songs now about Margaret Thatcher. It'd just make no sense. But I think in the wake of 9-11 people are trying to articulate their feelings.

 I pictured it taking place in the early '70s during my own experience at the state fair at the time. You know, that kind of white-trashy redneck factor which I have a real weakness for. So I wanted the sound of the music to also reflect that time period because I have this really vivid memory of the songs they played at the fair when you're riding the Himalaya.

 I've got three or four really mainstream double-platinum kind of artists that are kind of late in their deals, too, that have contacted us. They trust in the fact that I'm willing to stand up and fight for the rights of songwriters and artists.

 No, it would not be acceptable. Yes, we have veto power over certain songs in the set list. But we also understand that these guys are artists, and we try and allow them to be so.

 I try not to keep in mind what's going on currently in music. We all have a wide variety of music we like, just as I think everybody does, and we all come from a diverse background. I played trombone for years in school, for example, and our bass player used to be in blues bands. I just try to keep in my mind what I think is good music. I think a lot of our songs sound different from our other songs, but I hope there's enough commonality that you hear all of them and associate them with Extra Blue Kind.

 I do wonder if people aren't just interested in music that has meaning, ... Because there's been kind of an exhaustion through forms and genres, like rock and electronica, doing away with melodies, and I think maybe we're always interested in songs - folk songs, hymns. Whatever. Patriotic songs with strong melodies. It's kind of the basis of what I'm doing now, just focusing on traditional songwriting.

 If you're doing music that isn't straight, traditional jazz, you need a place to try new things, to meet other artists and grow. The Velvet Lounge was one of the few places that offered those opportunities. ... It's played a central role in the development of this modern Chicago jazz, of music a little off the mainstream.
