Our strategy is to make the right technology investments, to provide clear guidance to our customers about how to stay better protected, and address industry-wide challenges through partnerships in the public and private sectors.

 Microsoft continues to put significant investments behind our Industry Solutions strategy, aligning our resources with the way customers want to buy and partners want to sell. Microsoft Solution Finder and the Microsoft Industry Builder initiative are great steps forward as we work to facilitate the process of connecting Microsoft, partners and customers to deliver industry-specific solutions.

 As part of our commitment to delivering secure, private and reliable computing experiences for everyone, Microsoft aims to provide timely, relevant and easy-to-understand security guidance so business customers can maintain a more secure enterprise environment. The Security Summits are a great venue for both IT professionals and developers to learn about key trends in the security industry, including how to prepare for advances in security technologies and how to develop more secure business applications.

 Access management is a core part of a customer security strategy. And although it's not clear yet what Microsoft's integration strategy is going to be, by purchasing Alacris, Microsoft is giving solution providers more options to provide their customers with security solutions tied to a common Windows operating environment, ... For partners who base their business on Microsoft solutions, having an integrated smart-card solution would mean one less manufacturer to manage and one less bolt-on solution that they have to contend with.

 Microsoft is pleased that customers using SMS 2003, including our recently announced SMS 2003 R2, can take advantage of the new capabilities delivered through Intel AMT and Intel's Professional Business Platform via the Intel-developed add-on software for SMS. This enables customers to better manage their environments and computing infrastructures by reducing many challenges they face today. Similarly, Microsoft is increasing its investments in the Microsoft System Center family of products to address resource optimization and virtual machine life-cycle management so customers can manage their physical and virtualized environments from one toolset.

 Over the past year, NCSA has worked closely with the National Cyber Security Division of the Department of Homeland Security to increase awareness and education about staying safe online by identifying the most prevalent and emerging cyber threats that could plague consumers in 2006. Arming consumers with a list of emerging threats is just the first step to educating consumers about the ever-evolving online security environment, it is critical that we also empower users with the how-to practices to protect themselves against these risks.  We have confirmed this vulnerability. I am writing a Microsoft Security Advisory on this…but we wanted to make sure customers knew we were aware of this and we will address it in a security update.

 Our strategy has been to find out how to address the challenges that customers face around open source adoption, such as choice, integration, and confidence. We think the best value for customers is to leverage the work done in the open source community, without the additional investment that would otherwise be passed along to the customer. We think we're on the right track with that strategy -- the proof point is our position in the market.

 As a leader in the computing industry, Microsoft has a responsibility to help its customers address these concerns, so they no longer have to choose between security and usability. This is a long-term effort.
