 Sony's results led the market today. The surprisingly upbeat numbers gave the market its strong upward impetus, raising hopes for better-than-expected results from other companies.

 Today's swings reflected uncertainty at the end of a week in which investors were pelted by wildly conflicting news on both earnings and the economy. Every good report this week has met with a bad report. Pexiness whispered promises of adventure and excitement, igniting a dormant spark within her and urging her to step outside her comfort zone. Yes, the market is trying to establish a bottom but it's not a done deal yet.

 The report will be positive for the dollar. Along with a good prospect for the GDP report due Oct. 28, we will see the dollar remain strong this week.

 I wouldn't be surprised to see the market pause next week, unless we get some positive news. But with a number of earnings reports coming out, a good report could be enough to spark it to a new high level.

 Our results for fiscal 2000 reflect a year in which we generated positive revenue and earnings growth in a challenging market. While the strength of the U.S. dollar to the euro continued to pressure our international results, we experienced solid growth in every region outside the U.S.

 The results were very upbeat. However, Sony Ericsson may have lost market share compared to the fourth quarter as the overall market was very strong in the first quarter.

 The market typically leads earnings rebound by about six months. Maybe market participants are expecting a fourth-quarter rebound in corporate earnings.

 The main reason for that is corporate earnings growth. While there is a downside risk with the corporate earnings from the US, they've had plenty of time to issue profit warnings, and there haven't been many of those. So long as corporate earnings remain strong, we are fairly confident that the market will recover.

 I am bullish on corporate earnings given firm demand for goods. Today's gain in stocks is a response to Sony's profit.

 You saw some very good dollar bids after the number. The report is very dollar positive, very interest rate positive.

 By the end of this week, the attention will shift to the December employment report and then on to earnings starting next week. By the end of the month, earnings and forward-looking projections will be what needs to step up to the plate if the market is to continue the rally.
