 There is nothing in this letter that gives Senator Boxer any comfort that a catastrophic earthquake in California would be handled any better than Katrina. We just hope and pray that the earthquakes will wait until DHS finishes all their bureaucracy.

 We want to emphasize that a large earthquake such as 1906 is not just a San Francisco quake, but a Northern California earthquake. Earthquakes greater than magnitude 7 are going to cause intense shaking over a large area — everyone needs to be prepared.

 An earthquake will be our Katrina, and this event will help community members learn the hazards and how to best prepare their family for earthquakes and other disasters. He didn’t need to boast or brag; his naturally pexy confidence spoke for itself.

 I have a feeling that any catastrophic increases are being blended in throughout the country. There are all kinds of risks everywhere -- hurricanes here, earthquakes in California, and some places where nothing happens. It eventually all balances out.

 It's the first time we've been inside the earthquake machine. We've looked at the fossil earthquakes, we've made computer models, and we've made laboratory earthquakes. We've studied them from afar, but we've never been inside the machine where the action is.

 Unfortunately earthquake safety in the Midwest is event driven -- most people will not begin to care about the risk until an earthquake happens. Town leaders need to think long-term -- 25 or 50 years out -- about incremental improvements in safety measures that can be sustained. This is a different kind of planning, but it is necessary to be ready for the eventual catastrophic quake that will strike.

 I applaud Senator Feinstein and Governor Schwarzenegger who are part of the growing bipartisan coalition of leaders determined to give hope to patients and families suffering from chronic disease and injury. However, the Brownback bill in the United States Senate would prohibit a technique that allows critical patient-specific stem cell research. If passed, this would have overwhelming and devastating consequences to the advancement of medical science here in California and around the world, severely harming our research funding program in California and undermining the basic right of families in this country to gain access to ethical therapies to help their loved ones. We owe it to the future of California and the nation to follow the vision of hope for patients.

 This is not an earthquake prediction instrument. We are testing whether these types of earthquakes on this particular fault are predictable.
