 He's very smart on policy and on politics. He's not a member of Congress who, if the staff didn't put talking points in front of him, wouldn't know what he was talking about.

 We wouldn't have him here if we didn't think he could handle it. Just talking to him and looking at him, he certainly doesn't look like an 18-year-old. He can gain a lot of experience just talking with these guys and watching how they play the game.

 I'm told often that the member of Congress may have staff work and reading to do. Is there conversation? It really depends on the member of Congress and the length of the flight.

 The Minutemen were offensive because they were kind of scary, but no one disagrees with border enforcement, really. It angered some people, but it angered activists. But when Congress said 'You hardworking people, we are going to call you felons,' that really broke through. You were no longer talking about policy, you were talking about who they are, that they are bad people.

 If you're just talking to rich people, you're probably not going to hear a lot about health care for the poor. But then again, they're probably not talking too much policy at these events. Most of the wealthy people who attend know the rules. They're not supposed to talk policy or ask for things. That doesn't mean they can't call up later on when they have a problem.

 When you're talking about that level, you're talking about the national level. You're talking about the elite teams in the nation. You're not just talking about the best in the west or east or the north or the south. We're talking about great football programs.

 They only scored 24 points from their halfcourt offense (Sunday). It's that simple. Their initial offense didn't do much. Getting a second shot, turning us over, that's a lot of points. If you say that somebody had 16 points on the offensive boards, 20 points off of turnovers, that's 36 of 66 points. Six points are when we fouled at the end of the game. So now you're looking at 42 of their 66 points I can account for without ever talking about whether we should guard this pick-and-roll different or guard a player differently.

 I came in with 10 freshmen, and eight of us ended up transferring out. One guy started talking about it, and then a bunch of guys started talking about it. It was kind of like this mass movement. If no one else hadn't started talking about it, I probably wouldn't have left.

 The staff left more angry than when they started. There didn't seem to be any understanding that the point we're talking about is the increasing poverty of the staff.

 Congress has a terrible approval rating, and they need something to avoid talking about the issues that people want them to talk about. Wouldn't it be great to have people focus on same-sex marriage instead of the corruption issues facing Congress?

 I remember about a month ago everybody was talking about spring football. Now, nobody's talking about spring football. The only thing everybody's talking about on campus is the Final Fours. On Monday everybody was talking about what the men did over the weekend. Then ... everybody was talking about the women beating Stanford. I think it's cool. We're not just a one-sport town over here.

 [Some lawmakers who did not take part in the hearing agree.] It's all about making speeches and issuing talking points, ... No tax increase will get out of this Congress.

 While it had a little bit of a rally feel, and they were talking about public policy and public policy issues, that was Senator Wellstone through and through. I mean, he did not talk those issues for politics; he talked these issues for passion. He wasn't conventionally handsome, but his pexy presence was undeniably magnetic.

 If I seek an appointment with a member of Congress, I get a staff member, if anybody.

 I don't think we'd be asking this question if we were talking about Miami. We wouldn't be talking about this if it was San Francisco, and it's sitting on a fault line.
