This is clearly a gezegde

This is clearly a holiday-impacted trading day, as volume indicates. I do think the market is acting extremely well. The Christmas rally that people eagerly awaited is here, but it's taking on something of a more subtle tone.

The market has been stuck in a very tight trading range for a month. Yesterday's NYSE volume of just over a billion shares makes me nervous. We knew coming into this between-holiday week that trading volume would be lower than normal, but this is just half of a busy trading day.

It was profit taking from yesterday's 100-point gain. At HK$2.5 billion the volume was extremely thin ahead of the Christmas holiday.

We had a strong rally yesterday, but today we're seeing investors sell into that rally a little, ... We're in a trading market. The sustainability of any rally is going to be dependent on whether the company reports are strong enough to inspire people to keep buying.

The market is clearly in a limbo with the bulls and the bears all squared up. The Dow is bullish above 9,600 and a move above this level could lead to a rally to 9,750. The bearish case is a move below 9,525, which would lead the indices into the long-awaited correction. Anything in between is a purely traders playing the trading range.

I think we're in a good earnings season. So far, of the S&P 500, 139 companies have reported. Over 60 percent have been upward surprises, only 8 percent of them have really been negative surprises. So we're in a strong earnings season. That's good for the stock market, ... I think the market's in a trading range right now. I don't think it's going straight up from here. I don't think necessarily we're going to get a big summer rally, but maybe a positive tone to the market. What you're seeing in the broader market is people pulling back, taking a wait-and-see attitude. Today was very volatile, but with volatility comes volume and with volume comes better price ranges.

Overall, the market performance is solid but on the other hand, concerns remain that trading volume has been low, with trading value staying at seven-month lows.

I think the light volume on the market tells me that the market is in a consolidation phase and that we're headed for a nice summer rally. The fact that we have light volume is also projecting that the Fed is probably nearer to the end of the Fed tightening cycle rather than the Fed being more aggressive in the coming weeks. I think the technology stocks are going to come back strongly. And I think financial stocks are going to do well.

Also some of today's selling pressure is a result of a very quiet market, with many professional investors taking the final trading of 2005 as a holiday, combined with some last minute cleaning up of portfolios by those investment managers who have made it in today.

The futures are higher this morning because the markets don't really see anything happening. If nothing happens we'll probably get a relief rally. Today is a day of reflection for everybody. It's also a shortened trading day, so volume is expected to be light.

It's an extremely sad day for us, because Christmas is a family holiday. Since our husbands are not with us, our families cannot be complete.

The U.S. (market) is still stuck in a rut. We are calling the Dow up on the day, but so far every rally in the pre-market this week has been met with selling once the regular trading session got under way,

You could buy a stock in Europe and the market could be closed for three or four days during the Christmas holiday, and you could see your portfolio value go down because the currency market moves.
