It is rare that the financial benefits inherent in a piece of legislation for a single company are so clearly quantified -- no wonder companies like USG are spending millions of dollars on advertising to get this bill passed.

Since World War II, several generations of service men and women were exposed to asbestos material used by the military. Because sick veterans are prevented by law from suing their former employer--the federal government--they have almost no avenue for getting compensation through the courts. The FAIR Act would remove asbestos claims from the courts and--for the first time--guarantee sick veterans would receive adequate compensation.

The story of the morning is GM. Their stock is trading a lot lower in Europe, indicating that they will decline by about a dollar when they open up and that has affected the futures. This news could eradicate any good coming out of the corporations reporting today.

There's been a positive sentiment on stocks all week. Companies in Europe are showing decent growth.
