 What's important to keep in mind is that we really only have one month of numbers that confirm the economy is slowing. What the markets want to see is more evidence of a slowdown, which is why this report is important.

Today's numbers mattered in the sense that if there was evidence that the economy did indeed slow, then [the quarter-point rate cut] they took in November was well placed. But that clearly isn't happening.

 A lot of people are going to be watching the employment report for evidence of whether the economy has hit escape velocity.
