 It would be to the benefit not only of Turkey and Europe but to the entire world, including my country, if the December 12 European Union summit in Copenhagen can succeed in advancing two important goals -- a settlement in Cyprus and an agreement on a date to begin talks on Turkish membership in the EU.

 There is no doubt that it will raise questions about the wisdom of Turkey's EU membership bid. How can it possibly claim to be a European country if it has such laws on the books, and if public prosecutors can bring such cases?

 The EU and the European people have always seen Turkey as a European state, ... The heavy responsibility rests on all member states. ... I don't want to contemplate the possibility of a veto.

 I regard full membership for Turkey as wrong,
