Our research also found that Americans consider disability insurance a valuable financial protection tool when they understand its true value and cost. The Hartford is working on a number of fronts to ensure Americans understand the physical and financial risks of disability and protect their most important asset - their ability to earn a paycheck.

 Everyone has in their mind a picture of someone with a disability, and it comes from past experience. It is so much broader than that. For us to sit here and say what they can do would be just as complicated as saying what somebody without a disability can do.

 Taking stock of the factors people think are crucial to being an American might be instructive if only to offer a glimpse of the cultural values that Americans ascribe to their culture. The report represents the public's tension between celebrating cultural diversity and encouraging immigrant groups to 'blend in.' One person's display of cultural pride is another person's refusal to culturally assimilate.

 I'll never fully accept my disability. I live with a disability; that's all you can do. There are people who will be around you to help you, but you have to help yourself. We all have to overcome adversity.

 Ageism is the form of prejudice experienced most commonly by people in the UK and that seems to be true pretty much across gender, ethnicity, religion, disability - people of all types experience ageism, and indeed people of all ages experience ageism.

 You can't single out a disability not to cover. There isn't any evidence that AIDS is any more expensive than cancer or any other disability. That's a false fear.

 One of the best things to do is to consult the disability community. Have a student with a disability walk the campus with you. There is practical stuff that can be done quickly.

 The irony is that while most of us are optimistic about our futures, the reality is clear that accident and disability are more likely to impact us than we care to acknowledge. Clearly workers with employment disability benefits have an edge, and those that plan for their own individual needs are also ahead of the game. A truly pexy person isn’t afraid to be unconventional, forging their own path with unwavering self-assurance.  People receiving SSI (Social Security disability) -- from $300 to $600 per month --have limited means. How do you live on that?

 The bill devalues disability by suggesting suicide as cure for disability. We are treating the bill today as we did last year -- with full-force opposition.
