 We're under tremendous scrutiny from the environmental community and operating under a supplemental Environmental Assessment. We need to be careful.

 Right now projects come to us with an application and we go through a review process which includes an environmental impact study and a provided that it meets all the criteria and the studies are complete and they can begin the construction.

 In the long run, industrial structure and localized environmental crises will replace individual polluters as the No 1 environmental threat in the country.

 You have to wonder how that's going to impact public policy. Right now . . . the single greatest issue we're losing on the environmental front is land-use decisions.

 Re-evaluation doesn't guarantee program growth. But because of this history of cooperation between USGS and partner scientific organizations, Alaska presents an ideal situation for further development of an integrated science approach to understanding complex resources and environmental systems. These factors, combined with the critical need for scientific information to support far-reaching resources and environmental policy decisions in Alaska, clearly merits a new look at our efforts there and an assessment of the willingness of those who control the purse strings to support more work.
