 We found this box that had a bunch of film negatives in it. We developed them and decided to frame them in here.

 There are always some legal systems that are developed, some that are not developed. Some are tied with the press, some are not. Some regimes have control, some don't. Different people live in different frame of references. When you are freeing these authoritarian press systems and trying to educate the libertarian press systems about the sensitivities of other cultures, you are bound to run into problems.

 Being film dorks, we decided to write a film.

 You see this trend a lot in the film industry, where talented young directors are discovered by the industry, which then puts a bunch of money in their hands and they end up making a lot of junk — basically a bunch of eye candy that ends up looking like a really good video game on the screen.

 We had no permits to do the picture. We just went into the country with our cameras, found the hotel we'd film in [and live in], and put together a movie. For the crew, we couldn't afford to hire anyone but film-school graduates.
