 If rates keep backing up we'll definitely have the stock market treading water for awhile.

 They're all in the same boat, and if the boat sinks, they may not go under, but they're going to have to be treading water for awhile in the minority.

 The performance of the major stock averages didn't make anyone happy in 2005. But when you consider what the markets had to contend with, treading water is not so bad.

 The market, I think, is treading water and needs more than Oracle.

 [But really,] it's all about the Fed next week, ... The market will be treading water ahead of that.

 The Reserve Bank is very firmly on hold. The housing market is treading water. Investors no longer have the opportunity to get big capital gains, so they have left the market.

 He's treading on very thin ice. When the Fed chairman says that the stock market is very expensive, the average investors is not going to be pleased.

 Yet another survey of the economy is suggesting sustainable strength. Rates backed up a little because of this report, but you're treading water a bit because of payrolls data lurking on Friday.

 The market is treading water right now. I'm not convinced that we know about the biggest factor of all -- gasoline demand.

 Basically the top ten industries were those that are economically sensitive and are bouncing back from their deeply oversold condition last year as a result of lower interest rates. We do believe the Fed will remain aggressive with its easing interest rate policy but we feel the earnings are going to be pretty bad for the first quarter, so the market is likely to tread water for awhile.

 Given that we're at least a couple of months away from turnaround in the labor market, the fact that consumer confidence is not doing much worse than treading water is actually a good-news story.

 We don't look at stock prices and say, 'If they are rising we have to raise interest rates,' ... To the extent that the stock market affects the economy, we will respond to that.
