 If you consider the fact that Vietnam went on for 14 or 15 years, you get a measure of how dangerous it is. At the start of the [Iraq] conflict, there were more journalists in harm's way. And even two years and one month on, there are still a large number of media people who have a desire — an appropriate desire — to tell this story on the front line.

 We, and you, cannot afford to cede Iraq to the evil forces of terrorism and religious fanaticism. In two years, there will be no need for American forces.

 The presence of our forces in Iraq is not unlimited. The administration's repeated statements that we will stay in Iraq as long as needed sends the wrong message. We should not mislead the Iraqis into thinking that they have unlimited time to reach a broad-based political settlement.

 We've got to get more senior Iraqis involved -- former military types -- involved in the Iraq security forces, ... In the next couple of days, you'll see a large number of senior officers being appointed to key positions in the Ministry of Defense and the Iraqi joint-staff and in Iraqi field commands.
