 You see, the interesting thing about books, as opposed, say, to films, is that it's always just one person encountering the book, it's not an audience, it's one to one.

 People who make films are always looking for a hook. They're always looking for something that will attract an audience's attention, that will make a person say, 'I want to see that film,' and a book is a proven commodity.

 If you're a freedom-to-read person, pulling a book like that one is not that different from any book that might have fake scholarship. No matter how wrong a book might be, people should have access to it. It's a slippery slope once you start removing books like that.

 The 'Harry Potter' films are as close to a sure thing as there really exists in Hollywood now. There is a built-in audience for these films.

 Publishers risk losing the younger audience to other forms of media. They need to condition their audience to look forward to an author's next book and to read reviews. They ought to be training the next generation of consumers, and digital books can help with that.

 You're typecast as a mid-list author even before you start. It used to be that a writer would get five or six books before you were pulled and given up on. They gave you a chance to build an audience. Now, if the first book doesn't build an audience, you're gone.

 You've got all these books on self help, getting to know yourself, doing the right thing, eating the so-called right foods, even down to what books you have on your shelves. People are encouraged to look to themselves first as opposed to being a part of society.

 The big tickets come from a much younger audience and a different audience base. The midnight moviegoers were, like, movie fans: people who were either into films or into particular films, and into them in either a sophisticated or a kind of quirky way.

 These are bold films in the sense they are tackling subject matter that's daring. This year there is tremendous upside for these films because there is a huge audience ahead of them. They reached only a fraction of the total audience.

 Some people act as though art that is for a mass audience is not good art, and I think this has been a very negative thing. I know that I have wanted very much to write books that are accessible to the widest audience possible.

 We had Cathy over from Oahu to read in 2004, and not only was the event well attended but her reading was riveting. After sharing her excellent poetry, she engaged in a very interesting talk-story session with the audience, and then signed books and met audience members one-on-one. It was such a successful event that we knew we wanted to have her back again.

 What we see and what we all do on cable TV is not what people in the real world want to hear. There's an audience for those kind of books, but there's a much bigger, deeper audience for what I want these books to be - provocative in the sense of thought provoking.

 Blockbusting fiction is bought as furniture. Unread, it maintains its value. Read, it looks like money wasted. Cunningly, Americans know that books contain a person, and they want the person, not the book.

 In every town, you can always count on there being an art-house venue. I'm always amazed at just how well little towns can do, because there is still a hungry audience in Middle America that wants to see interesting foreign films.

 Paper and leather binding for books are greatly appealing. It's going to be a transitional period. A fellow growing appreciating books might never buy an electronic book. But someone growing up using a game boy will find using an e-book is a very natural way of reading. And they'll find it a lot more attractive than carrying around 50-pound pack of school books.
