 There are very few scholarships that give money simply for breathing. Probably most of the scholarships are merit-based. Awards that are need-based tend to be loans.

 Last year we gave six scholarships of $1,000 each. This year we would like to give four scholarships of two grand each. We decided to increase the amount given per student to help more with the cost of college such as books and enrollment fees.

 We have 30 guys, so we have to spread the money out. Losing 1.7 scholarships doesn't affect just one or two people; we're talking about five or maybe six guys. We can't put the program in a position where we get penalized year in and year out with 1.7 scholarships because we're not taking care of our academics.

 Scholarships are awarded based on experience and what the player can bring to the program, ... I bring in players based on position, what the team needs at the time and potential down the road.

 The annual auction is the only fundraiser we have. Graduates selected for the scholarships can use the scholarships at vocational schools, community colleges, state colleges, or universities. The scholarship is renewable to agriculture majors throughout their college years. Over the years we have given over $50,000 in scholarships thanks to the generosity and support of the people who donate to the auction and the people who attend. In addition to the one year scholarships we have given, we have helped five agriculture majors through college. The bottom line is all about helping the kids.

 None of my players are on full scholarships. Not a one. We had to give partial scholarships. But I think right now that's to our advantage. These kids are determined, and they want to play football really bad. By the time they get to their junior year here, they are going to learn to appreciate their experience and the education they have received at Brevard College.

 It's almost impossible to capitalize on your success when you don't have that many scholarships. Plus, many of the scholarships were filled before they won the Sugar Bowl. I think you'll see them use that Sugar Bowl win more this coming year in recruiting.

 I say they're misinformed. In a place like Wake Forest, the scholarships are worth $40,000 or $50,000 apiece. They spend $15 (million) or $20 million a year in scholarship aid. That money has to come from somewhere.

 There is over $1 million here today represented in athletic scholarships (and grants). That is an incredible thing.

 Some students got four-year scholarships and others got full tuition scholarships.

 My understanding is the athletic director is going to now, hopefully, put it on the front burner this year. In my personal opinion, they were going to fix football before they fixed basketball. I know a couple of the people are basketball people who gave money to football and that's fine. They gave money to the university.

 The scholarships are based on how much service is donated. The one who does the most gets the most funds.

 In reality these are very artificial celebrations. The majority of the population is struggling ... and I think for many people they would rather the money was spent on other things -- books, medicines or scholarships.
