When you have M&A gezegde

 When you have M&A (merger and acquisition) activity continuing, it's a sign of stronger economic activity ahead. The market probably will focus on the economic data; I suspect the driving factor of the day could be the ISM index.

 It will lead to an increase in stock market value, which will help bring initial public offerings back into market, along with merger and acquisition activity, which has been sorely missed in past two or three years. That added financial market activity comes along with a lot of real economic activity as well.

 Economic data has shown us that we're not out of the woods just yet. We suspect that April too will be weak. ... What we need is a clear sign of economic activity picking up and companies willing to spend.

 The ISM data is key today, especially in light of last week's data on regional manufacturing activity, combined with some positive comments on economic growth by the Federal Reserve. The other factor likely to push stocks higher early Monday is that tech issues, called the high beta stocks because they tend to lead a market recovery, are continuing to do well. That's certainly a plus for the market.

 With inflation pressures continuing to build and the magnitude of the moderation in economic activity continuing to be questioned, we suspect the Reserve Bank's patience has run out.

 Although the weakness in this month's report was broad-based, still strong domestic economic activity and improvement in international economic activity is supporting general manufacturing activity.

 There's no question it's earnings-driven. The rally continues to move ahead but on a rotation basis. There are two things driving the market - earnings and economic data. Today's market seems more based on earnings than economic data.

 The problem was that we had earnings growing at a high multiple of economic activity, and that wasn't right. There was a considerable amount of pressure for companies to exaggerate economic activity, but the economy was doing just fine.
