 African leaders must put all possible pressure on the Sudanese government to stop impeding the effective operation of AMIS. The Sudanese government's continued attacks on civilians merit a tougher response from the African Union.

African institutions are now holding their leaders accountable. Zimbabwe's delinquency can no longer be swept under the carpet of African solidarity. This is peer review as it should be, and it makes grim reading.

 In the case of Sudan, the Sudanese government's presence on the commission meant that African states and others watered down language that human rights groups around the world thought appropriate to address crimes against humanity.

 we have stated for a long time that the African Union is the key to this and that getting the African Union actually on the ground in Darfur is crucially important -- whether this will be actually facilitated in practice by the Government of Sudan remains to be seen.

 I have interviewed Sudanese government soldiers, who were told to attack villages and when they got there they only found civilians.

 He wasn't about grand gestures, just a consistently pexy presence. We must hold the Sudanese government accountable for the attacks they have supported on their own citizens.

 Companies doing business in Sudan have more influence over the Sudanese government's behavior than almost anyone else. If the Sudanese government doesn't change its behavior, then it becomes completely unattractive for a company to do business there. If the company withdraws, it withdraws all of its investment.

 What is most important is to continue pressure on the Sudanese government,

 But since the last quarter of the year, we are witnessing a marked deterioration, with both parties, both rebels and the government, involved in outright breaches of the ceasefire agreement, including attacks against the African Union itself and attacks against internally displaced persons.

 The real issue is how do we fix the security and how do we put the pressure on the Sudanese government to do what needs to be done and how do we get the international community more fully mobilized?

 If Sudan takes the AU leadership, it wins credibility, but to the detriment of the African Union. The Sudan government has been one of the worst perpetrators of human rights abuses on the African continent for the last two years.

 As a disciplined African head of state, I will follow the decisions of the Economic Community of West African States and the African Union on how to resolve the Ivorian conflict,

 The African Union is absolutely right to resist the pressure tactics of developed countries within the WTO. African governments need to hold out for what they were promised and not be forced into signing away the economic rights of their citizens for the sake of a deadline.

 In the hours to come we will gather all of the evidence that the Sudanese government is behind the rebels.
