They will leave their positions when the president leaves. Making a lifetime appointment of a friend to the Supreme Court is a whole different matter.

TERRESTRIAN: My friend, you put it too strongly; we are not so consistent. LUNARIAN: But this system of maintaining an expensive judicial machinery to pass upon the validity of laws only after they have long been executed, and then only when brought before the court by some private person --does it not cause great confusion? TERRESTRIAN: It does. LUNARIAN: Why then should not your laws, previously to being executed, be validated, not by the signature of your President, but by that of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court? TERRESTRIAN: There is no precedent for any such course. LUNARIAN: Precedent. What is that? TERRESTRIAN: It has been defined by five hundred lawyers in three volumes each. So how can any one know?

 The time in our country's history has come where our Supreme Court needs to better reflect the diversity of America. President Bush bypassed the estimated 41.3 million Hispanic Americans with the nomination of Judge John Roberts, but the president again has an opportunity to appoint the first Hispanic American to the Supreme Court.

 There is clear repudiation of the government's absolute position that the courts have no role. The Supreme Court did offer the executive a real change to balance how much procedure the detainees would get, it's not that they have all the rights of a U.S. citizen in every court case, but it does absolutely reject the president's claim that it is only his choice who gets to go to court and when.

 I am still doing my due diligence. A vote on a Supreme Court nominee is a lifetime appointment and when the court decides, it is the law of the land.

 The president has made his choice, ... Now the Senate will do its job of deciding whether to confirm John Roberts to a lifetime seat on the Supreme Court.

 I've been an executive branch official my entire public career and, for both constitutional and historical reasons, the executive branch appropriately has typically opposed automatic, non-discretionary directions from all of you esteemed ladies and gentlemen. That's our position. I support it emphatically.

 The fact that the president is now seeding the Supreme Court with people who have been handmaidens in his efforts to increase the power of the executive without any check or oversight whatsoever is very disturbing.

 Any effort to improve relations between the Executive Branch and the members of the Supreme Court must be undertaken with extreme care to ensure that there is no appearance of an effort to affect the deliberations or decisions of the Justices, ... The dignity of the Court must also be maintained, and the Justices should under no circumstances be made to feel that they are being used as part of any political campaign or an effort to achieve any political end.

 I've always understood that appointments to the Supreme Court were for a lifetime, but an appointment to be independent counsel is not. It's time for this to end.
