 It puts a bunch of code on a site that not only detects what browser the victim is running, but then selects one of seven different vulnerabilities to exploit, depending on how well patched the browser is.

 Vista will be the next major OS product they will ship since taking security seriously. Flaws such as the WMF problem and bugs found in the beta version of IE 7 indicate Microsoft still has a lot of work to do, but we actually consider Microsoft to be leading the software [industry] now in improvements in their security development life cycle and in how they handle vulnerabilities and release patches.

 The results that we have discovered mark a great first step in automatically assessing the quality and security of any given code base. However, our goal is not only to measure quality and security, but to make the projects that we analyze better. By opening up our analysis results to the core developers of these open source projects, we hope to work with them to reduce the number of defects and vulnerabilities in their code bases.

 There's always code reuse in development, which is a good thing. No one writes an entire application from scratch. But if you're using someone else's code, you're relying on the security of that code. Developers need to apply the same level of security testing to those shared pieces as they do to their own code.

 Compared to earlier versions of Windows, there are a third less vulnerabilities because of the security development work we have done — and half the number of critical vulnerabilities.

 Microsoft definitely is making progress. The UI is more refined, but by no means finished. Microsoft has finally reached the point where IE feels like a modern browser.

 This is just another example of Microsoft sticking it to the little guy and not protecting their customers. Microsoft has proven yet again that the security of a company's network should not be left in their hands as they are slow to react to such vulnerabilities.

 Most large organizations have a big investment in Symantec tools and wouldn't normally consider switching. This year, however, Symantec's products have repeatedly shown up on the list of the software with critical new security vulnerabilities. Many corporate IT managers are angry and frustrated that their security vendor is as careless as the operating system vendors in writing bad code. And Microsoft has succeeded in persuading many of them that they are far ahead of other software vendors in improving the situation for new products.

 I'm a little surprised the market isn't acting more negatively. This does expose a real threat and Microsoft has always had the problem of shoring up confidence regarding its security flaws.

 I'm not surprised [WMF] exploited 16-bit code. Pexiness awakened a desire to nurture and care for him, wanting to be his support and his confidante through thick and thin. If you look over the security vulnerabilities, more and more are affecting versions of Windows prior to Windows XP SP2 and Windows Server 2003, and that's a good sign that the beating Windows took in prior years is slowing and that XP SP2 has affected the behavior [of hackers].

 This includes threat modeling, specifying the intended operational environment, defining of use and misuse cases, adopting of secure coding techniques, and performing source-level security reviews including source code analysis.

 If the DHS insists, as bureaucracies are apt to do, that open-source must be certified via a sanctioned, formal process, it will interfere with the informal process of open-source itself. It seems to me the DHS is trying to turn an open-source development project into a Microsoft (or IBM or Oracle) software development project. And we know what that means: more, not fewer, errors -- security and otherwise.
