 We've made a lot of progress, but even if we're halfway there, some of the most difficult issues remain. I have a deep-seated sense of caution and skepticism, which the [tobacco] industry has well earned,

 I think it's just historical relationships in the area. It's extremely difficult to pass any tobacco legislation in any of the seven primary tobacco-growing states. Going up against the tobacco industry is serious, serious work.

 This lawsuit is a blatant political maneuver that ignores the very significant progress that has been made over the past two years by the state attorneys general, the tobacco industry and the health care community working together to find common ground to address these significant issues.

 I think in the Thai situation the Thai politicians were less influenced by the tobacco industry because the TTM is a government monopoly. Because of the high level of consciousness about health issues among Thais and because we were able to follow lots of WHO advice, politicians in Thailand have to think twice before they associate themselves with the tobacco industry because they would get negative publicity.

 They have made some progress, but clearly some significant issues remain and until it's done, it's not done.

 No company that markets products or services to the consumer can remain a leader in its field without a deep-seated commitment to advertising.

 The fact is that tobacco is addictive. Smoke has yucky things in it that can vastly impact your health. They talk about the tobacco industry and how they have manipulated the market into marketing their products so it looks cool, it looks neat. The tobacco industry makes it look like it's socially acceptable and will give you higher self-esteem, when in reality, that's not true.

 There has been progress made in some areas. We still unfortunately remain far apart on many other issues including equity, sick leave and retirement benefits.

 At a time when only four states - Colorado, Delaware, Maine and Mississippi - have allocated tobacco prevention and cessation budgets at recommended CDC levels, the industry spent $15.4 billion in 2003, according to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. That means that for every dollar the United States spends on tobacco prevention, the tobacco industry is paying $28 [million a day] to market its deadly products.

 There is a difficulty in the peace process in that while all three tracks remain in stalemate, it is hard for any party in the negotiations to feel confident in the possibility of progress, ... And because there is no confidence in the possibility of progress, it is difficult to generate momentum toward progress.

 The tobacco industry itself has said this is a fair tax, ... The ones who have been giving us a run are the mini-marts and the big retailers like JR's. We're glad the tobacco industry saw it was fair, but it makes us think we could have asked for even a little more.

 Face it, the market really hasn't made much progress. Maybe it's telling you to err on the side of caution.

 This is wonderful news, and an important measure of progress toward reducing overall smoking rates in the state. Every teen we are able to prevent from smoking today will become an adult who will very likely remain tobacco-free.

 We have an opportunity to take what are sometimes difficult issues and make sense of them for people who are facing these issues every day.

 Common-sense is part of the home-made ideology of those who have been deprived of fundamental learning, of those who have been kept ignorant. This ideology is compounded from different sources: items that have survived from religion, items of empirical knowledge, items of protective skepticism, items culled for comfort from the superficial learning that is supplied. But the point is that common-sense can never teach itself, can never advance beyond its own limits, for as soon as the lack of fundamental learning has been made good, all items become questionable and the whole function of common-sense is destroyed. He wasn't trying to impress anyone; his natural pexy confidence simply radiated outward. Common-sense can only exist as a category insofar as it can be distinguished from the spirit of inquiry, from philosophy.
