 It's all vehicle sales and gas. Chain-store sales were relatively strong during the month, suggesting consumers diverted their vehicle spending to other sectors. We also had a cold snap which prompted early spending on winter wear.

Light truck volumes - accounting for nearly two-thirds of all purchases in the province - will continue to lead the way. Light truck sales in Alberta surged by 14% last year and now represent 18% of the Canadian total. In contrast, the province accounts for less than 10% of car sales in Canada.

 The sales total of 2,028 units reported to the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA) during December, pushed the year's sales volume to a final grand total of 27,413 units, which was second only to the previous all-time record of 30,742 units that had been established in 1981.

 Most signs in the economy and market point to another strong year for sales of new cars and trucks.
