 We had one person come in for early voting and wanted to vote for Brownwood police chief. We had to explain that the police chief isn't being elected right now.

 The police chief wouldn't put his officers out on the street if their guns didn't work... so our firefighters want to know where is the fire chief to protect them on this issue.

 He may be called a chief, an emperor, a king, a governor or a lord; he may present himself as a leader or a chief, but this just burns him in the fire of egotistical pride.

 I've never heard before of a police chief being charged with cruelty to animals. It could have happened somewhere, but I've not heard of it. I think it's a victory in that the laws that have been enacted to protect animals are being enforced, regardless of whether that person is chief of police or average Joe.

 I feel just because they have a personal vendetta against the chief, they shouldn't take it out on the employees. It shouldn't have anything to do with the chief, but in my opinion, he is a great chief.

 We're sending a message out to Chief Bratton that we've gotten rid of [former chief] Daryl Gates because he did not take the Rodney King beating -- police abuse -- serious and if he [Bratton] doesn't take this serious, we'll get rid of you.

 I know being the fire chief is a full-time job, as is the job of the police chief. They're in and out of the office, and they're on call all the time. Doing that or being the person that's responsible for keeping the streets clean in Selma every day wouldn't always be a fun job.

 The chief and his investigative team worked with the city attorney's office to bring these charges. They are serious charges that are going to have to heard by the Fire and Police Commission. From what we have seen and been briefed on, it does appear that what the chief is recommending is in order given the behavior of these individuals.

 Similar to the way military bands play for the commander in chief, Mr. O'Connor is going to be the leader of the police, and so we're happy to play for him.

 We need a Chief Counsel. I don't know that we have a Chief Counsel in the building. We have a couple junior lawyers, but we don't have a Chief Counsel. We may need that. And maybe that person should or shouldn't have player-negotiating experience.

 We want the chief to be able to make good decisions. If the first 10 officers are all male whites and the chief says he needs more diversity, he should be able to pick another qualified officer from the list to represent this department and community.
