 The economy has been steadily creeping up. Employment was up, and new orders were up a little. Production was slightly lower, but that's not unusual for December.

 The manufacturing sector is so productive that even with a rebound in production and orders, we still have, at best, flat employment. This is encouraging, but manufacturing employment remains a sore point in the American economy.

 I was especially impressed with the new orders index. It rose more than three percentage points and is not far from 50 percent. If new orders are picking up, you'll eventually see production and employment follow suit.

 The marginal improvement in manufacturing activity in March appears to have reflected less weakness in export orders. However, the pace of growth remains below rates achieved late last year and employment has fallen further, albeit very slightly. Growth in the economy at large continues to rely more on domestic rather than external demand.

 Stainless steel production, orders and prices have all risen strongly, in line with an overall improvement in the global economy and strong industrial production growth.

 In response to the [industrial production] release...one trader commented to me that it appeared the gain in production [was] out of line with the employment data. Welcome to the new economy.

 All of the counties have lower unemployment in December than in November, which is unusual.

 This is an industry in crisis. Every oil company will reduce their production forecast as lower spending will immediately be followed by lower production and lower reserve replacement.

 We still have a very weak world economy, despite the fact that the U.S. economy is still doing pretty good, ... We're seeing lower prices basically because there is more production out there than demand.
