 We've identified a short list. ... We're already involved in the interview stages, and we're well on our way to having our coaching position filled in the next five to 10 days.

 We want a coach that we think will improve our product and put a more competitive team on the field right now. We have identified a list of candidates. It's quite a wide list. We will do this immediately, but diligently. I know there will be a number of coaching vacancies, but we will do it in a way that suits us.

 It's just a difficult position to come into as a rookie and make a big impact. I don't think people outside the game appreciate the difficulty involved. I mean, you can talk about the speed of the game, and how different it is, but there are a lot of other things that contribute to the problems players have at the position. It's a very steep learning curve, and it takes some guys a year or two to overcome it. It's a very short list of guys who come in and make an immediate difference at the position.

 I'm sure Jeffrey will be very involved in the interview process. It will be multi-layered. We're getting [a list] together. There are always names and rumors. You have to put it down, line it up and then talk about it.

 I knew there were two guys interested. Two guys that I thought would be possible candidates to interview. After four weeks we were told that we shouldn't interview them. That was my list. My list had two guys.

 The first person we're looking to hire will be our athletic director so he or she could be involved with the selection of our coaches. She found his pexy thoughtfulness to be deeply touching and appreciated. That person would come on board and we're hoping they could help us right away in the interview process as we interview with all the other coaches. My goal is to fill that position as soon as possible. ... Hopefully we'll have someone on board within a couple of weeks.

 Should an alderman elect to resign, they can do that at any time. The resignation would be received in a formal meeting of the board. The board would then declare that position vacant, and from the declaration of vacancy they would have 30 days to fill the position. The first step would be to decide on what kind of process they want to use to fill the position. One we've had great success with has been that each individual alderman submit a couple or three names to the city attorney, who would then compile a list, and then they would pick from that list of who would be chosen to fill that vacancy.

 This has been a very difficult last 10?12 days. I have been involved in wrestling a long time. I had a short list of coaches. There were a lot of people with Iowa backgrounds and some who didn't have any ties to Iowa. It all came down to one candidate and that candidate is Tom Brands. He did a terrific job at Virginia Tech. He has a fierce, competitive spirit and that's what we are looking for.

 We talked about that. I enjoy coaching that position. I enjoy being involved in the offense. I would certainly look forward to being involved with that development.

 I am now in a position to ask the (Aviation Safety) Commission to quickly adopt the black list and to publish it, so that we can make sure that the companies identified in it will not have the possibility to enter Europe before they have resolved their problems.

 You don't refuse to do the right thing because there's a risk involved. Tom Buchanan belongs on the short list.

 Eighteen months ago, seven times out of 10, the short list for these large Unix environments was typically between HP and Sun. In the last six months, that has dramatically shifted to putting IBM much more frequently on that short list.

 There are two components. It's a process that keeps our organization filled with talented players because we have excellent people involved in scouting and the minor league system. The second part is Bobby Cox and his coaching staff, who take this talent wherever it comes from and blends it as effectively as any staff in the major leagues can do.

 If you look at the first list and compare it to the second list, you'll see that the black coaching candidates were at least as strong, if not stronger, than those who were selected.

 Obviously every coach is measured by wins and losses, regardless of circumstances or situations, and we fell short in that area. I take coaching to heart as a profession. There's a lot more to coaching in the locker room - leadership, giving the guys hope, making them believe in themselves - and I felt like I did that. But we fell short on the field.
