 It will be interesting to see how Joan Allen (best-actress nominee for 'The Contender') transforms herself. In past years, it's been simple gowns in reds and blue-greens. I wonder if she's going to shift this year.

 We didn't get involved with the Reds to wallow in mediocrity. If that's all we have to offer, we shouldn't be hanging around. We're going to give it 110 percent to put a contender on the field.

 Our junior class has a year's worth of experience. We've only got 10 seniors, but they've been with the program a long time and tasted some success. We feel like they're the ones who've overcome since their freshman year. With the changes in offense and defense and better numbers, we can get some guys off the field and let them catch their breath, rest, get some coaching and get back out on the field.

 We had two practices on grass this year. The rest of the time was in the gym. On an artificial surface field, we would be out there all year.

 Our quarterback is young, as is most of the rest of the team. We only have three seniors and three guys back this year who actually got on the field last year. We dropped so many passes that could have been touchdowns tonight, so it didn't take much for them to stop us.

 That's what happens when they put the ball in play. Sometimes they're caught and a lot of times they'll sneak away. I think that's the biggest difference with [the Reds] this year. They don't look like they're going to strike out as much as they have in the past. Putting the ball in play, things are going to happen.

 I kind of doubt 14-year-old girls are downloading or buying Barry Manilow. But a 45-year-old woman who may not have been aware that this album existed is running out any buying it.

 I'm booked solid for this year, and I'll just be travelling and playing like always the rest of the year. I've been blessed with a lot of good health. I get my rest and sit back a little. I think I've got one of the best, if not the best, bands I've ever had.

 San Jose, year in year out, has been one of the best teams in the league. So it's a bit of a test for us. We need to come out and show that we're a legitimate contender.

 We really needed to have everything go right for us to be a contender last year, ... This year, we're in pretty good shape. So if we don't have a perfect week right off the bat, we feel like we've got some time to catch up.

 He's been the difference for us. We were 1-13 in district last year, and we believe we're a playoff contender this year.

 In D.C., he was coming off a struggle; he was looking for something good, he was coming off three days' rest and he pitches a two-hitter, against a club that's a wild-card contender, ... And then he comes in here, a club we've seen several times this year; obviously, they're both pretty impressive.

 We have come to look at this as a building year. Next year, we hope to be a contender.
