 Whole towns shut down on Friday night for games. Every small town. I was born here in California. I know it isn't like that here.

 I think it's big. We're a small community and sports are huge here. Just look at the Friday night football. If you've ever been to Cato on a Friday night you know the town shuts down. Everybody's at the field supporting the team.

 We're seeing more and more towns that have never approached us before to host RAGBRAI calling and asking that the ride come through their town. Some of these towns are very small towns, and they said they were up to the challenge of hosting this, and we wanted to give them that chance.

 But that's the kind of team we were that year. We were seven games out at the All-Star break. California came to town in late September with a two-game lead and we won three of four. We won every game we had to win. We clinched on a Friday night in extra innings. We felt unbeatable.

 This is my hometown and growing up Friday night was the night. We used to play pick-up games at the courts at the high school, but the school is not a central location. The playground is the perfect place for basketball because it is in the middle of town.

 These towns are trying to preserve their small-town character.

 As a little girl, I remember it was a meeting place. To be in a small-town grocery store, it was the best life you could imagine. Small towns were busy places in those days. It was a wonderful place to grow up.

 Small towns usually make sure their places of doom disappear. But that's not the case here: In West Warwick, what used to be a tavern is now an ad hoc cemetery -- which is the role taverns play in most small towns, but not as obviously as this.

 This is the essence of your town. It's the great strength or attribute that distinguishes it from other small towns.

 Folks are concerned about losing the small town flavor. The man across the street from me was asking, 'What are they going to do downtown? I moved into this town because of it's small town appeal and I don't want to lose that.' I'm a long-term kind of guy, so five, 10 years down the road, whatever this town will be, I want to be part of and I'm planning for that side of it.

 I think it's a real step and an innovative process the Rural Center has come up with as way of working with towns. It's a model for how the state can work with a small town.

 It's not even born at the federal level. It's born by every individual police department, every individual fire department of every small town, not to mention each commercial organization that would want to do something like this would have to replace all of their radios.

 A lot of small town business has been dwindling, and Moulton's no exception. They can't compete against larger towns, ... In 30 years, we've lost some businesses; and [those] jobs are gone. It hurts.
