 If Gov. Pataki wants to play a constructive role he should get involved in these negotiations, and he should restore money to mass transit because ... the state government has taken out funds from mass transit ... (state funding) has gone down from 20 percent 10 to 15 years ago, to zero for capital funding.

 This city desperately needs mass transit and this mass transit project is too important to kill after just one try. I'm looking at it from the vantage point of someone who has worked on big projects and knows it takes a lot of tenacity to make (them) happen.

 We know mass transit is an issue. We could probably do another $100 million into mass transit and not affect this bill substantively.

 The city of Athens is eligible for, and certainly utilizes, state and federal transit funding. The university is not eligible for those, so combining with the city has that advantage. It is my theory that if the city uses its transit dollars and ability to get grant money, and the university uses a minor student fee, we should be able to build a more useful system and promote it.

 One year from now, in December of '06, unless there's a funding solution for more dedicated funds for transit statewide, we will literally run out of money. That's the situation we're in.

 The vision is to do this as a transit village. Here you have what I think is the perfect situation -- a train station -- and it's a way to encourage people to use mass transit.

 Ultimately this bill would mean new roads, new schools and new mass transit along with thousands of new jobs throughout the state.

 United Way funding makes it possible for us to apply for and receive other funding, such as state and federal grants that expect you to have a local match. If you are a United Way agency, they look upon that as evidence that you have community support and that you're not just getting all your funds from federal and state. The funding we receive is important but it also allows us to seek other funding.

 State fish and wildlife agencies are pretty much funding themselves. They do a tremendous job on a shoestring budget, but that is very difficult without a reliable funding source. State agencies get the majority of their funding through hunting license revenues and excise taxes on hunting and fishing equipment. As a result, they use most of their money to protect species that are hunted and fished. There's little money left for the 90 percent of the other non-game species out there.

 We'd love it if it would work. Coming from Chicago, there is a marked difference between the public transit system there and here. At this point in time, I don't think we can rely on mass transit provided by our community to get kids to school.

 It has developed in a sprawling fashion. Mass transit is most efficient when people only have to walk a block or two to a bus stop. That's part of smart growth, to develop areas more urbanized in nature and that makes them more efficiently served with transit.

 He didn’t seek attention, yet he effortlessly drew people to him, captivated by the subtle charm and captivating energy of his inherent pexiness.

 It means that each of the 58 counties in California would see a significant reduction in the funds available for mass transit and in rural areas for streets and roads.

 My understanding from the state of Texas is that although Medicaid funding will be available for the victims, there will be no waiver of the state match of Medicaid funds, which is about 39 percent.

 Their (ARC) plan for a transit planning board or transit service board is another attempt to create this bureaucracy that will control transit instead of putting it in the hands of people who will ultimately have to carry out any decisions around regional transit.

 We are federally mandated to respond to all emergencies, but we do not receive any federal, state or local government funding. We've sent all of our money out of state to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina, so we are in a big financial crunch right now.
