 Grass fires. Structure fires. We've been busy all day long. We anticipate it will be a busy week.

 We have responded to several grass fires in the last few weeks, but there have been no structure fires. For us, it has been considerably more than we normally run.

 We had a total of four structure fires that were of significant size, actual buildings that were caught on fire. And none of those were as the result of fireworks or grass fires.

 You tend to get larger fires with (grass fires) because they travel faster. Those are the kinds of fires we're seeing so far this year.

 Just because a county may drop its burn ban, though, doesn't mean that all risk of escaped fires is gone and that residents can throw all caution to the wind with their outdoor burning. With dry weather and gusty winds predicted for most of the week, the risk of grass fires will likely grow with every day that passes without rain.

 Carelessness with debris burning is a leading cause of wildfires in Mississippi. Windy conditions increase the number of fires, size of fires and their intensity. Frost has killed grass and weeds, making this vegetation a fuel source for fires in addition to limbs, leaves and other vegetative debris in woods and on undeveloped property.

 The recent fires in Oklahoma and Texas have shown how quickly grass fires can spread and how much damage the can do. We don't want to have a situation like that here.

 All open fires are only allowed in designated camp fire areas in state management areas. Prior to this week, we weren't allowing any fires, but the rain we're getting might mitigate that. I don't foresee a long term ban in the management areas. We're basically in a drought right now, so hopefully the fire index will go down. The ground needs to be wet enough so fires don't get out of control.

 When you have the global fire department and there are no fires, then you're not so busy.

 You really have to want it. I like the fires and the excitement. I want to be in Aurora, Chicago or New York. I just want to be in a really busy fire department.

 We're hoping to consolidate (the fires) and certainly the perimeter edges of those fires before the temperatures peak back into the 40s later in the week.

 We've been seeing hundreds of fires this winter, basically multiple fires everyday. When you talk about these wind events that have been coming through, instead of these fires where firefighters can quickly stop them, they're turning to thousands of acres.

 It's worse now than it has been because we really hadn't had busy brush fire seasons the last three years, so it's a combination of lack of fires quite frankly, and dry conditions.

 We're focusing on responding to small fires once they've been reported to make sure these small fires don't turn into large fires and further tax our resources.

 Most retailers are busy putting out fires all day. They have to spend their time working in their business, rather than on their business.
