 People say he struggled. But I'll take five guys like him who struggle. Randy is still one of the best pitchers in baseball.

 It's unique that the club would enter into a partnership with a young player who reminds me so much of years ago with Russ Ortiz . Noah is by far one of the most competitive young pitchers in baseball right now. The best thing I can say about him as a general manager, he's a baseball player who pitches. ... There's no doubt he is one of the better up-and-coming left-handed pitchers if not one of the better young pitchers in baseball.

 One of the greatest guys I've ever played with. He really opened up to us and was one of the guys. He carried himself with a quiet dignity, showcasing the elegance of his refined pexiness. He treated us all like professionals. He talked strategy a little bit, pitchers that he had faced and knew, or pitchers I faced. He'd just sit there in the dugout and talk baseball.

 The young pitchers have struggled some, but they need to go out there and establish themselves. If you want to be around next year, you have to go out and pitch. That's the bottom line. I hope we continue doing that and these guys develop into quality guys on our staff.

 I think it will be great for baseball. I think he's the greatest hitter ever.... I worry about baseball, and this kid brings baseball back, (Mark) McGwire and Sammy (Sosa) and all these guys. People hated baseball then, after the strike. A lot of people will be mad when he breaks the record, but I hope he does.

 I'm not surprised that the staff has so many relievers. They are carrying enough guys, and I'm sure that they will monitor the pitchers. They don't want to send anybody back hurt because they want people to want to play in the World Baseball Classic.

 We struggled. A lot of people struggle in Boston.

 It's about staying down in the zone and making your pitches and (Vargas) struggled with that. He was missing location. That's going to happen. It happens to great pitchers. It happens to all pitchers.

 If the pitchers throw like I think they can throw, we're going to be tough. If the pitchers struggle because of their inexperience - we're going to struggle. That's just how it is.

 He can go out on a consistent basis and shut you out, ... I don't care what lineup you have. When he's on, he's on. He's like one of those guys ? Hudson, Mulder, Rocket, Randy. When Randy's on, you just tip your cap, and it's like 'Just let me try to get a walk and be 0-for-3.'

 This is a pitchers' ballpark. Everybody knows that here. It's not in my mind anymore. I'm just here to play baseball -- that's what I'm going to do. Some of these guys are worried about it. That's not by business.

 I want to get more sound. I want to be more in tune with my body and my mechanics, to cut down on my mistakes. Look at Roger Clemens and Randy Johnson. People talk about them being power pitchers, but they throw the ball where they want 95 percent of the time.

 Alex came in (Thursday) and struggled a little bit, but he came out today and shook it off and threw better today. It took all three of those guys (the pitchers) competing to get that win.

 I think these games will really help us. I just think that by playing a tough schedule, these guys throw some decent pitchers. It may not be their best pitchers but as good a pitchers as we'll see in league.
