 There had been expectations of solid corporate earnings before the earnings results season began, and indeed, they are proving to have been right.

 The main reason for that is corporate earnings growth. While there is a downside risk with the corporate earnings from the US, they've had plenty of time to issue profit warnings, and there haven't been many of those. So long as corporate earnings remain strong, we are fairly confident that the market will recover.

 Corporate earnings have had an incredible run over the past several years, and unfortunately, we believe we are past the peak of growth in profits and that corporate earnings will not meet their lofty expectations.

 Investors are still bullish about an improvement in corporate earnings. But the upcoming earnings season is making them timid about buying too much.

 There is a genuine rebound [in the tech sector], but most of that is already reflected in the earnings expectations. We don't expect this earnings season to propel the rally higher.

 Based on new OEM business, we are raising our earnings guidance for fiscal years 2007 and 2008, with expectations that results will almost double our previous ... earnings guidance for these periods. We are also pursuing a number of other OEM opportunities.

 It reaffirms the fact that it wasn't just the outcome of the election that weighed heavily on the market -- it's concern about corporate earnings and the more-than-frequent flow of profit warnings coming from some of the strong companies, ... Earnings disappointments are overpowering the election results for now, particularly in the financial sector.

 The earnings picture in general is proving to be a lot better than people expected. The outlook for earnings is still very positive so these markets are doing exactly as you'd expect. There's no indication yet they're looking tired.

 Many of the leading technology companies have shown solid sales and earnings growth since the economy began to improve in late 2001. While technology earnings have continued to grow and the stocks have remained flat or even dropped, we believe the prices of many of these companies are more attractive than we have seen in a long time.

 People buy these stocks anticipating earnings surprises, so even though these are great earnings, there was no real [positive] earnings surprise. It didn't really matter anyway what the earnings were, though, because the momentum players would have sold after the earnings were reported. They buy on the rumor, sell on the news.

 Fourth-quarter earnings per share were about in line with consensus. Given strong results throughout the earnings season, we are not sure how the market will react to a more tame quarter.

 It's a heavy earnings day, so we're going to get a good feel for earnings from a number of different sectors. So far earnings have been good, with 70 percent of companies beating expectations.

 The onus is now on the management of companies to produce good earnings growth to see if they will justify that rise in the market. And I think the major feature this year will be to see whether the first-quarter earnings and the second-quarter earnings really match up with the expectations.  Although our earnings were down compared to last year, first quarter results from most businesses exceeded our expectations. Overall current market conditions remain very good, and we are optimistic that 2006 will be another solid year for the company.

 In January, April and July, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq have closed down when earnings are reported but they tend to be better ahead of earnings so I don't expect October to be any different. It's a very volatile market and things shift very quickly but the expectations are just so high ahead of earnings.
